Surround Yourself in Love

By Nancy Rynes, author of Awakenings from the Light
In my last blog article I wrote about a truly silent form of prayer. While it's wonderful to sit in this silence and allow yourself to feel a deep sense of love pour out from you, it is possible to take the practice to another level.
Read on to discover how you can use silent prayer to feel more love toward yourself.
Many NDErs come back with a message that we humans would be well-served to love ourselves more. I have written about this in my book and teach workshops on it, too. But for many people, extending love, compassion, or kindness to ourselves is not very straightforward. It's almost easier for us to love our pets than it is to love ourselves.
Silent prayer can help.
While it's not the complete "fix" for any self-love challenges we might face*, I believe that silent prayer can help us achieve more compassion or kindness toward *us*. Once you are ready to surround yourself with love, try this variant on silent prayer:
Surround Yourself in Love (Prayer)
Spend some quiet time filling your heart and mind with the positive feeling-state of love. If you have trouble with this, begin by immersing yourself in the love you might feel for a family member, friend, or pet.
Let go of the need to have words in your mind while you do this. Focus instead on the positive feeling-state of love for a few moments.
Next, begin thinking about your human body and all of the stuff you have experienced together: cuts and scrapes, illnesses, youthful crushes, marriage, accidents, thrills, having children, racing a car, your first college party and first hangover, a painful breakup...whatever your body and mind have experienced, allow those to become part of your consciousness for a few minutes.
Marvel at how wonderful it is that your physical body has endured so much over your lifetime. Our bodies have an innate capacity to survive that boggles the mind. You may or not be in perfect health at the moment, but allow yourself to dwell on those times in the past that you HAVE healed, endured, and thrived.
Now go back into your heart. Allow that positive, high-vibrational feeling-state of love to wash over you and through you again. Let it support every part of your body. Try to feel gratitude for all that IS working in your body and life at the moment, even if you can only think of one thing. Focus on the positive aspects of your body and mind for as long as you can, filling every cell of your being with love and appreciation.
Gently come back to the present moment when you feel ready.
I do this prayer or contemplation a few times a week and it has helped me expand my own sense of love and compassion toward my human self. When I think about my daughter, all of the beautiful experiences I've had, the amazing sights I have seen, broken bones, broken hearts, jobs, illnesses, challenges, and insights, my admiration for my human self grows deeper and richer a little at a time.
Give this prayer a chance for a few weeks. If you still see no positive change in your feelings toward yourself, it may not be for you. That's OK. Some of us do better when we focus on loving others first. I'll write more about that next time.
Wishing you heavenly love,
Blessings,
Nancy
*Again, if you are heavily challenged with thoughts of self-harm or feelings of hatred directed at yourself, I urge you to seek the help of a trained psychologist, counselor, or chaplain.

A Silent form of Prayer

By Nancy Rynes, author of Awakenings from the Light
We humans can be such talkative creatures. We speak out loud to communicate our thoughts and feelings to one another. Most of us have an inner voice, too: our ego perhaps, or our fears, or even a mimic of what we heard from a parent or spouse. Some of us talk in our sleep, and often we talk when we pray or meditate.
I'm not saying that talking is a bad thing, not at all. But I'm offering a suggestion that perhaps it might be fun to vary things a little.
Give silent prayer a try.
During my near-death experience (NDE), Mari, my spiritual guide to heaven, mentioned something that I'll admit to not really understanding at first. She told me that while the Divine loves all of our prayers, we might consider sometimes praying in silence. She told me that "going into" silence was another way to connect with Spirit. Mari also said that she didn't necessarily mean "meditation" -- she was adamant that it was more of a form of prayer to which she referred.
It took me a year before I really thought about that particular request and when I did, I assumed that she meant either contemplative prayer (which I do daily), or engaging in favorite activities in which our ego minds could go silent (hiking, running, gardening, knitting, etc.). While these can bring great benefits to us by enhancing communication with Spirit, in hindsight I think she was talking about something else:
Truly Silent Prayer
What  do I mean by "Silent Prayer?"
Here is my take on it:
Spend some quiet time filling your heart, mind, and physical body with a positive feeling-state such as love or gratitude.
Let go of the need to have words in your mind while you do this. Words are not necessary, really. Focus instead on the positive feeling-state. It's OK if words are in your mind at first but with practice, I'll bet you'll find that the positive feeling becomes so strong that it overcomes any need to have words in your mind.
Let go of the need to "do" something, too. Just "be."
Try to bask in that positive, high-vibrational feeling-state such for a few moments. Let it wash over you and through you. Focus on the feeling.
I stumbled on this form of prayer only in the last month. One evening I was having some difficulty getting to sleep so I decided to do a little contemplative prayer. It often helps me calm down and reconnect with Spirit after a hectic day so I thought it might help me sleep. Well, part of the way through my session I was overcome with a gigantic feeling of gratitude that started in my heart area and seemed to expand to engulf my whole body.
I stayed in that feeling-state of gratitude for about five minutes, just letting it wash through my body. No words, no "doing." Just sitting in gratitude.
In the days following, I decided to try simply going directly into a positive feeling-state, bypassing the contemplative prayer. For me, the results were wonderful! I increasingly felt lighter in my heart and more upbeat as the days went on. I felt more in touch with Divine guidance, too. In each of my sessions I focused on love, and while it wasn't exactly the same as being in heaven, it's the best way I have found (for myself) to replicate that otherworldly experience. Now I'm able to go into one of those positive feeling states and just sit with it for 10 minutes or more.
There is another bonus to silent prayer, besides possibly feeling more upbeat. If you recall my newsletters about the music of heaven, being in a positive feeling-state sends out a spiritual energy wave from you. This spiritual energy becomes part of the music of heaven. Remember, the love in your heart is God's favorite song. The Divine really does hear it when you allow yourself to  relax into love, gratitude, happiness, or other positive states.
If you would like to try silent prayer but are having difficulty getting in to a positive feeling  in your heart, allow yourself to think about someone you love dearly, or perhaps something for which you are deeply grateful. Keep that loving or grateful thought going through your mind while you reach into yourself to feel the feeling associated with the thought. It might take some practice but in time, and with patience, I bet most of you will be able to hang out in a positive feeling-state for at least a few minutes.
You may already be practicing a form of prayer or meditation such as this. If so, I'd love to hear about it and if it helps you in any way.
Wishing you heavenly love,
Blessings,
Nancy

We Are The Music of Heaven

By Nancy Rynes, author of Awakenings from the Light
(Note: This is a continuation of my last article called The Music of Heaven)

In my last blog I shared with you a little bit about the music of heaven that I and so many others have "heard" with both our ears and our hearts. I have also explained the origin of that haunting, unearthly song:

Heaven's song is the collective heart-voices of the angels, masters, and other souls sending their love, gratitude, and joy back to Spirit. Heaven's song also contains the underlying "sound" or vibration of Divine love that flows out to all beings, everywhere.

But here's the icing on the cake so to speak: Each one of us here on earth contributes to that heavenly song too.

Yes, this means YOU.

The human being that you are right now with all of your talents, faults, joys, and sorrows, also contributes to the song of heaven. Your being can add to the song just as much as any angel. Every time you feel or act or speak from a place of kindness, compassion, love, gratitude, appreciation, joy, enthusiasm, or even fun, the spiritual energy of that positive action or feeling-state travels outward from you. It radiates from you, in part, as spiritual energy that is truly a vibration. It merges with the other vibrations of love and gratitude from other beings and becomes one part of the harmony in the song of heaven.

So no, the "song" doesn't just reside in the spiritual dimension, nor does it completely originate there. It actually does reverberate through our physical dimension so that our physical beings, in concert with our souls, can actually add to its harmony and complexity. And it is through this vibration or "music" that the Divine surrounds you in love, even now, whether you can sense it or not.

I really do mean it when I say, "The love in your heart is God's favorite song."
Each time you send love to Spirit, lend help from of a sense of compassion, act in a kind way, or are truly grateful for what you have in this moment (among other things), you add to that heavenly song. It doesn't take much effort on your part. Heck, you don't even need to do it consciously or intend for it to happen. It's a natural consequence of acting and being in alignment with your heart and thus with Divine love.

Also understand that we don't need to die, be with someone who is ill, or be close to death ourselves in order to hear the song. People can sometimes sense it when they are deep in prayer, meditation, are out in nature, having a spiritual experience such as a vision, or even making a breakthrough in psychotherapy. For most of us in human form though, the "when" of hearing heaven's song is often unpredictable.

I believe we can increase the chances of hearing or sensing it if we engage in regular spiritual, soulful activities (prayer, quiet time, being of service, etc.). But from my point of view, hearing the music of heaven shouldn't be the primary reason we follow a spiritual path. Instead, remember that nurturing the soul has far more important benefits: creating a stronger, more tangible connection to God and other beings; reducing fear and anxiety; increasing inner strength, resilience, and confidence; being more "present" and in-tune with those around us; living a more enriched, joy-filled life; and so much more. Hearing the music of heaven is to me simply a potential (yet beautiful) side benefit, not the main reason for walking a spiritual path.

Your takeaway: remember that YOU are a part of Divine song and heaven's song is a part of you.

We are all part of the One Verse, the One Song.

Wishing you heavenly love,
Nancy

The Music of Heaven

By Nancy Rynes, author of Awakenings from the Light
It's the moment after you leave your earthly life and you're about to take your first step in that spiritual realm some call "heaven." Perhaps a loved one is beside you, or maybe an angel, or even God. But you stop for a moment, totally entranced by what seems like a glorious sound. Music, but music unlike anything you've ever heard on earth.
It's as if a billion beautiful and harmonious voices sing an ethereal melody that overlays an orchestra of gentle-sounding instruments that you cannot identify. Each voice in the chorus harmonizes with the rest, yet each is subtly different, too. Each individual, yet each a beautiful part of the whole. You can't make out the words they sing but somehow that doesn't matter. The music carries with it incredible love, peace, and joy that gently enters your spirit-body and cradles every bit of your being in its embrace.

You know without a doubt that you are home.

What IS the music that so many people report hearing during a near-death experience?
We've heard reports of this heavenly music for millennia. It's not just those who died and came back who talk about the "angelic chorus." Hospice workers, physicians, nurses, caregivers of dying family members, those who are terminally ill, and many more report hearing this unearthly music.

I can tell you from my own experience that heaven's music is unforgettable, indescribable, and has spoiled my love for most earthly song that I enjoyed before my time in heaven. But something you might not know is that I also heard heaven's chorus in November of 2000, fourteen years before my own experience of death.
It was early in the morning of November 12, 2000, when I got the call that my father had passed. It wasn't a surprise -- he had been battling cancer for seven years and had slipped into a coma almost a week prior to his passing. I lived five hours away via automobile so by the time I arrived at my parents' home, it was about 10 AM. I opened the front door to enter their home and as the door swung open I heard a tremendous chorus of joyful, loving, ethereal voices. I started crying...I didn't know what I was hearing but nevertheless, it affected me deeply. At first I thought one of my family members had some music playing on the stereo but when I walked inside the home I saw my mother and brother, somber, in shock, and crying. But no music played on any stereo or radio. I felt confused and figured I was making it all up due to my own grief and shock. Remember, it was at this point in my life that I was an atheist so I didn't believe in anything like angels or God.
Many years later I also heard this chorus during my own time in heaven in January of 2014. Many other NDErs come back talking of angelic music, too. It seems to be one of the defining characteristics of near-death experiences.

What is that music, and what does it sound like?

When I asked my heavenly guide what it was, she explained that the "music" wasn't exactly music as we on earth would define it. Heaven's music is beyond physical sound.

Heaven's song is the collective heart-voices of the angels, masters, and other souls sending their love, gratitude, and joy back to Spirit. Heaven's song also contains the underlying "sound" or vibration of Divine love that flows out to all beings, everywhere.

Heaven's song is the vibration of Divine love, gratitude, and joy that suffuses the spiritual realm.

Because our spirit-bodies are not physical and don't have ears like our human bodies do, the senses that we're familiar with on earth don't really apply. Things overlap. We feel emotion almost as a forcefield. We see many layers of energy to all things, and perhaps down to the subatomic level. Feelings have color. Sounds have visuals. And the vibration of love and gratitude gets perceived as music (which is, after all, simply another type of vibration).

Now for the hard part...what does heaven's music actually sound like?

This is the closest I have been able to find...but still, it doesn't have quite the depth or breadth of what I heard:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hOVdjxtnsH8

The other challenge we humans have in trying to recreate this music is that there aren't physical instruments like pianos or violins in heaven. That being said, the above music on YouTube should give you a basic idea of what I heard.

Wishing you heavenly love,

Blessings,

Nancy

Peace Closer to Home

by Nancy Rynes, author of Awakenings from the Light
This newsletter is a general response to several emails I have received in the last month from folks who are very worried about the state of the world. Their concern is understandable...the peaceful world we thought we knew seems to be changing too rapidly in ways many of us didn't anticipate.

Note: if you are feeling despair, depression, and hopelessness right now, I urge you to reach out to a behavioral health professional in your area (social worker, psychologist, etc.) or perhaps a chaplain or other faith-based leader. I know some of you are struggling. If life feels too hard, seek assistance whether from a psychologist, physician, or chaplain. They are trained to help in ways I cannot.

Dear Readers,

You ask about what to do...how to make a difference in the nation or the world...how to survive this seemingly crazy time where people seem to be at odds and in conflict more than ever before...how to help...how to create peace, all when you feel powerless to make a difference.

Truly, I cannot give you or anyone else peace. That comes from inside of you. It can be hard work but it is something you CAN achieve. I will only say that perhaps instead of focusing your efforts outward (to national/international politics), move your focus closer to home for a time. (I write a lot about this in my book Awakenings from the Light (http://NancyRynes.com) ...now I understand why this was stressed so much to me during my NDE.)

My guides have asked me to pass along to you all that now is the time to strengthen your spiritual life and focus a little more on being of service closer to home.

A few ideas:
  • Pray, meditate, send good thoughts outward. It does help.
  • If you don't have one, create and maintain a spiritual practice for yourself. It doesn't have to be complicated, just consistent.
  • Strengthen your bonds within your local community (whatever those bonds are for you).
  • Go on a video/audio news fast for 3 weeks (instead, get your news ONLY by reading online or in newspapers).
  • Be of service in your circle of family, friends, neighbors, or community (not politically though, if that causes too much distress).
  • Be of service in ways that stir your heartstrings, not your anger. You need a heartwarming experience right now. Go cuddle babies at the local NICU, or walk dogs at your local animal shelter. Bring groceries to an elderly neighbor, or knit hats for the homeless. There are many other ways to help locally.
  • Practice gratitude for what you DO have in your life instead of focusing on all of the "bad" stuff happening "out there."
  • Learn to connect with the Divine, your own spiritual guides, or Higher Guidance (but remember to ALWAYS protect yourself first).
Yes, I do have quite a different perspective than many, but I understand why some of you are having difficulties. I am not really shaken by the negative stuff as much as many of you are. Things DO seem crazy and people DO seem at odds. You are right to hold a level of concern not just for your nation, but for global welfare. But that doesn't mean you can't achieve some level of peace in your own life. It's a challenge to learn to be IN this world, but not OF it (quoting Jesus), but it's extremely valuable to try bring some peace into your life. Try some of the things I suggested above and you will be off to a healthy start. Remember, though, to never become complacent as humans often do, and try to avoid sinking into the same kind of tactics as others are using (fear, intimidation, name-calling, lies, etc.). For those in the USA, our freedoms and rights are spelled out in our Constitution so if the US is your country, hold yourself to the standards set out there. Many have died to protect those freedoms and rights that you now enjoy...let's work to keep them in place. Above all, stay true to who you are. Be bold. Be brave. Be Love. On a cosmic scale, what is happening now actually needed to happen. None of what is going on in the world somehow magically came into being in late 2016. It was there before, just hiding out in the shadows. We see the problems, and now that we see them we can work through them. You have probably heard that sometimes people have to hit rock bottom before they make a change...well, cultures or societies are sometimes like that too. Now the problems are being exposed which then allows us to (over time) transform them. I was wonderfully amazed at the huge outpouring of solidarity for peace and human rights that I have seen recently. We need to keep that momentum of peace and love going, and growing, not just in the USA but across the world. Each person alone likely cannot change the world individually but we each can have a HUGE impact on the lives of those close to us. And when we put our individual circles of influence together, when we band together, we CAN positively change the world. But it will take much patience, perseverance, solidarity, and love. I hope that helps, even if a little. Blessings, Nancy

Purpose and Legacy

by Nancy Rynes, author of Awakenings from the Light

A longtime friend of mine recently made his journey across the veil to what lies beyond this life. I was honored to be in physical proximity to him in his last few months here on Earth. During that time, he and I had many deep, spiritual discussions about his upcoming transition. He knew his earth-time was limited and he wanted my input on some of the things that concerned him.

My friend wasn't so much afraid of death or meeting his Maker as he was concerned that he hadn't fulfilled his life's purpose. His struggles in this life were many and he realized that one of them revolved around completing tasks. No matter the cause of that particular "failing" (in his words), in those last months my friend grew very concerned that he hadn't accomplished what he had come to Earth to do, that he was leaving something BIG undone.

He was afraid he hadn't completed his purpose, that he was somehow a disappointment to God.

From my speaking engagements around the country, I can predict that at least one of these questions will be asked in each city: "What is my life's purpose? How can I find my purpose? Am I doing what I've come here to do?"

I told my friend what I'll tell you: RELAX already :-)

Listen to your heart-voice or intuition. What is it saying? Follow that more, especially if it's leading you down a path of love, kindness, connection, or creativity. Is your heart-voice happy and singing? Then trust it; trust that you are on a good, positive path, that it's leading you in the "right" direction.

Pay less attention to your ego. You know, your ego? The voice that says you're right and everyone else is wrong; the voice that tells you to put others down rather than to be compassionate and understanding; the voice that buys into fear and separateness rather than strength and connectedness. The ego can easily lead you down an unhealthy path in life if you put too much faith in what it has to say.

The reality is that only the Divine and our own souls know if we are on track in our lives. Sometimes our spiritual guides know too. But your heart-voice (your intuition) is your direct line to Divine guidance. Listen to it. What is it telling you? If it suggests a course correction, consider it. But maybe it's telling you that everything is A-OK right now and to continue doing what you're doing; that yes, you can be kinder and more compassionate, but that you're on track.

Just remember to do your best. Your best IS good enough!

Let's look at the question from another angle. If you have lived your life with your heart in the right place, meaning you've tried your best to be kind, helpful, and compassionate, you're on a good track and you probably don't recognize all of the positive ways you've influenced others. We often don't give ourselves enough credit so I'm giving you permission to give yourself a mental high-five when you are kind, generous, or compassionate towards others.

Remember in Awakenings from the Light I wrote about the ripple effect of our words and actions? That our kindnesses travel outwards from us in ways we might not anticipate? That's what I want you to take with you today, that you may not recognize the far-reaching, good effects you have on the world around you by just being YOU. Just continue to be your kind self, listen more to your heart-voice, and don't worry so much whether you are fulfilling your purpose. And please, give yourself credit for the good things you've done.

Back to my friend. The reality about his life is that he didn't give himself enough credit for having had a positive impact on others. No, he didn't save the world but he did positively influence MANY people.

Here's just one example: Over a decade ago, my friend gave a young college student a summer job. She was on the verge of leaving school because money was tight, but he stepped in and gave her a job so she could finish her degree. What did she do with that degree? She is now the brains and chutzpa behind designing and building large solar energy farms throughout the USA, the most recent one here in the Pacific Northwest. In his last weeks, even with failing health, my friend was able to travel to the grand opening of this new solar farm that powers over 1,000 homes. The former college student, now green-energy pioneer, let my friend know that this amazing solar farm would not have happened without his kindness and generosity.

That's Legacy.

We leave a legacy just by being our kind, loving, compassionate selves. By doing what we feel in our hearts is the right thing to do. And often times we don't have to "do" much, we simply have to "be."

So chill out a bit about your purpose and allow the Divine to guide you to it. Instead, follow your heart more often and your ego less. Make loving decisions (as much as you can). This will help you leave a legacy of love, kindness, and compassion, and  may just help you fulfill any purpose you might have.

Blessings,

Nancy
